What is Character Strong?
Character Strong is a curriculum and professional development training focused on fostering the whole child with vertically-aligned lessons that teach Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and character side-by-side. The SEL competencies include: Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. Character development is routed in core principles of patience, kindness, honesty, respect, selflessness, forgiveness, commitment, and humility.
JWMS is intentional about promoting the school culture and climate by encouraging positive interactions and relationship skills. Character Strong lessons are taught weekly in every Homeroom and students are challenged with a Character Dare to promote their skills outside of the classroom setting. Staff are given weekly Character Dares to also build stronger relationships with their students and each other. Families are given the opportunity to participate in family dares that are posted on the JWMS Facebook page. This practice in addition to Restorative Practices and the WEB program help to promote our mission of challenging minds, empowering potential, and succeeding together at JWMS.
