What is available for teachers at CAVOC?
A SCHOOL FOREST EDUCATION LIAISON – Mike Cheslock is happy to help make your visit run as smooth as possible. He can take care of set-up, manage curriculum materials, and he can lead rotations and teach lessons if need be. You can contact Mike by e-mail at cheslmik@rhinelander.k12.wi.us or by phone at 715-365-9745.
CURRICULUM and LESSON PLANS – CAVOC has older, traditional lesson plans available for grades K-8 and newer lessons for grades K-3 that were created by our teachers in 2017. Both sets of plans are very good and can be viewed at
https://www.rhinelander.k12.wi.us/schools/cavoc/CAVOC_Lessons.cfm. You are always welcome to bring your own lesson plans and activities to CAVOC.
TECHNOLOGY – Two laptop computers (one for each upstairs room), projectors, and large screens used for presentations and videos… two microphones and a PA system. NOTE – It is wise to bring back-ups of your presentations and materials.
SLEDS AND TUBES – There are 10-12 inner tubes and a few sleds available at CAVOC. There are two sled hills... a larger, newer hill for older students, and a smaller hill for the little ones.
SNOWSHOES – CAVOC has 25 pair of snowshoes designed to fit 3rd grade to adult. We have 16 pair of youth snowshoes designed to fit younger students. There is a special area designated for snowshoeing.
PLAYSCAPE AREA (OUR KINDER FOREST) – This area is an active learning area designed for younger students (4K-3rd). It can be set up for supervised free play. To view what is available in the Playscape area, please visit http://www.rhinelander.k12.wi.us/schools/cavoc/PlayscapeActivityGuide.pdf
LU BERNDT ACTIVE LEARNING CENTER – An area that has been redesigned to accommodate younger active learners. There is a sensory table, art area, music area, building area, microscopes, binoculars, and more. This area is designed for
Pre-K - 2nd grade.
ROPES COURSE – Starting in 4th grade, students and teachers are encouraged to
use the Challenge Ropes Course. CAVOC has one of the best high and low ropes courses in the state. More information can be found on the website
https://www.rhinelander.k12.wi.us/schools/cavoc/cavocropescourse.cfm.
POLLINATOR GARDEN – It was built and planted in 2019. Various lessons and activities for pollinator gardens can be found on the Internet.
TRAILS – CAVOC has many miles of trails that can be used for hiking, skiing, and sometimes snowshoeing. Since the trails are groomed for skiing during the winter, there are some special rules involving other activities. Please check with the School Forest Education Liaison to find out about proper trail usage.
TRANSPORTATION – The expectation for all classes is that they attend CAVOC twice per year (once in the fall and again in the spring). The curriculum office will pay for transportation for both of those trips. A third, winter visit is optional, but encouraged. The curriculum office will also pay for transportation for your winter trip. You can bring your classes to CAVOC more than three times if you wish, but in that case you would have to find a different source of funding for your bus. Teachers are required to work with building secretaries to arrange all transportation.
OTHER – Check with the School Forest Education Liaison to inquire about other options available for you at CAVOC.
