ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) EXAMS

Many colleges, but not all, offer students the opportunity to receive college credits for scores on AP exams. Students should review this option with schools they are considering. AP Exams are given each year in May at RHS. To learn more about AP Exams, please contact your RHS AP teacher.

ACT/SAT TEST DATES

The ACT Test is the college admission test most commonly taken by RHS students who plan on attending a 4 year college/university. Students should review the specific requirements of schools that they are considering to see if either the ACT or SAT is required. Wisconsin 4-year universities require the ACT. Both tests can be taken as often as desired. There are 6 ACT test dates between September to June. Historically, most students first take the ACT in 11th grade on the April or June test dates. Students can either register on line or by mail. Applications and information are available either in the Student Services Office or on line, www.actstudent.org. RHS high school code: 501-960.

ACT TEST PREPARATION

The best method for scoring well on the ACT and replacing anxiety with confidence is to be knowledgeable and well prepared. Sign up in Student Services for the ACT Preparation Workshop. This will be held at RHS in Room 203 on Wednesday, October 10th and Wednesday, March 13th during the 2012-2013 school year. Students will have the option of signing up for tree different sections.  Section A is 1st and 2nd hr.  Section B is 3rd and 4th hr. Section C is 6th and 7th hr.

ASVAB  (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery)

The ASVAB is being offered at RHS is offered to aid our Juniors and Seniors in learning more about themselves and the world of work.  Students will explore occupations in line with their skills and interests.This opportunity will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 and Wednesay, March 27, 2013, 8-11, in LGI.

This comprehensive career exploration and planning program includes a multiple-aptitude battery test, a career interest inventory, and an interpretation on what the resulting scores and interests mean for a student’s future.

Schools may choose to allow students’ scores to be released to military recruiting services—RHS has chosen not to have  scores released.

The ASVAB Career Exploration Program provides both web-based and printed materials to help students consider their results and explore possible career choices.  Each student will be given their own access code to explore various options at the www.asvabprogram.com website.  With links to the Occupational Outlook Handbook and the Department of Labor’s OCCU-FIND websites, our students can continually explore the world of work that awaits them post-academia.  We also encourage you to explore this website.

We are fortunate to be able to offer this career exploration program for free.  Getting students thinking about, and making career choices that fit their skills and abilities is a task we take very seriously.

YOUTH OPTIONS

The purpose of the Youth Options program is to provide students with the opportunity to take classes not offered at their high school. Youth Options provides greater learning opportunities for qualified high school juniors and seniors. Students who are considering a technical career, wishing to begin college course work early, or wanting to prepare to enter the workforce immediately after high school graduation will be interested in Youth Options. The program allows students to take credit courses at Nicolet while receiving both high school and post-secondary credit for successfully completed courses.

The law regarding Youth Options states that only juniors and seniors “in good standing” are eligible for the program.  Rhinelander High defines “in good standing” a student with a credit total that is required for their graduating class.

A student in good standing is as follows:

a.)    The student is successfully progressing toward the RHS graduation requirement of 22 credits;

b.)    There is not a history of poor attendance, behavior problems, failing grades;

A complete list of Nicolet College  courses can be found at www.nicoletcollege.edu

Each semester, students that want to participate in Youth Options, must complete the

“Nicolet College Youth Options Participation Intent” (yellow form) and the “Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Youth Options Program Plan and Report” (green form), and their RHS transcript and submit to Student Services.  Students may need to take the Accuplacer at Nicolet or submit ACT scores.

The deadline for submitting forms for participation in the Spring Semester is October 1st;

The deadline for submitting forms for participation in the Fall Semester is March 1st.
