New Face in the Front Office
Mrs. Germer will be moving to Central School as the secretary beginning in August. We will miss her and the warm welcomes she gives each day to students, parents and staff. She has been a big part of making our school a family.
Mrs.Biesterveld from the library, has been chosen as the new secretary. She has filled in for Mrs. Germer many times as secretary over the years. Her knowledge of procedures, protocol, and names of students and staff will add to a smooth transition.
Saying Goodbye to Mrs. Belter and Mrs. Leighton
Each of the ladies was asked: What has been the biggest change to education in their years of working in the district?
Mrs. Belter has taught at Pelican for 22 year. Her response was “An increase in social and emotional needs of students , the drive for data collection, and a greater need to differentiate daily instruction.”
Mrs. Leighton has been a paraprofessional in the district for 30 years. Her response was “The use of technology in the classrooms.”
Parent and Staff Book Discussion
Temple Grandin has released a new book titled The Loving Push. The Special Education department has purchased 10 copies for interested staff and parents to borrow . The plan is to then discuss the book together. Temple Grandin is a world-renowned autism spokesperson. She is widely celebrated as one of the first individuals on the autism spectrum to publicly share insights from her personal experience of autism. Please give me a call or email if you are interested in reading and participating in a book discussion on a date to be determined.
6 New Chrome Books
Pelican School has received 6 new chrome books from the Rhinelander Hodag Schools Foundation. Students in grades 2 and 3 will use these books to increase their knowledge of technology standards.
Summer School Update
Summer School starts June 13th and ends July 8th. School will not be in session on July 4th. Bussing information will be mailed the first week of June. The first couple of days of summer school the bus routes take longer, so, parents should not be alarmed that their student arrives home after the projected drop off time.
Confirmation letters will be mailed to all families who have enrolled their student in summer school at Crescent, for grades entering 4K-2nd, the middle of May.
Students attending Pelican for summer school , entering grades 3rd through 5th will not receive letters because we do not have a waiting list. These students will get their schedule the first day.
All second graders attended the SPLASH program at the YMCA of the Northwood's this month. The program is designed to help swimmers and non-swimmers stay safe and healthy in and around the water. The program was of no cost to the school. For 12 of the students this was their first time at the YMCA.
We are grateful for this partnership with the YMCA. Pelican second graders received many compliments on their good behavior from the Y staff members.
