What is Battle of the Books - Senior Division?

Battle of the Books is a statewide competition designed to encourage reading and discussions about books.  It is a fun, academic-based competition that is divided into three divisions - elementary, middle and senior. Students read the books from the state list.  The statewide competition is run by WEMTA (Wisconsin Educational Media & Technology Association).

How does it work?

1.  Register in the library, online or drop off this completed sign up form (pdf) by November 15th.  You can register individually or as a whole team of three or four members.  Students self-select teams and make their own plans for reading the books.

2.  Read the books on the list. Some teams split the books up, pre-assign books; or teams pick one book at a time on the list. Teams meet during Advisory Club Days from November through February to discuss the books and try their luck with some "mock" battles.  "Mock battles" start in December when question stored on the WEMTA Moodle website are available.

3.  Compete against other teams in our school and disstrict.  In early February we run our local RHS Battle Eliminations and our district NCSS vs RHS Battle Eliminations.  The winning district team competes in Statewide Competition Week on Feb 24th in either NCSS or RHS LMC.

Competitors answer a series of "trivia" questions covering plot, characters, and setting of the books.  Students are encouraged, but not required, to make note cards or notebook pages to help them remember the characters, setting, and important events of their books.  Every trivia question asked in a battle is answered by stating the title and author of the book. Here is a sample battle question:  "Name the book in which a horse and a boy are stranded on an island."

A Moodle site for all divisions is active beginning in December.  Our RHS Team does not travel since the competition answers are submitted using the online Moodle site. State Battle Rules - click here (pdf).

Who may participate?

All RHS students!  Our BOB Teams are organized during October and November each year.  Add your email address to the signup form to receive updates, practice questions and meeting notifications.  You can participate in both the face-to-face and online Moodle discussions.  The face-to-face book discussions are held once a month in the Rhinelander HS LMC during Advisory Club Days.  The 2011-12 Schedule with dates and times are listed below .

What is the Deadline to Register?
Deadline is November 15th (Advisory Day for clubs).

Who do I contact with questions?
Contact Library Media Specialist, Ms. Andrews, with questions.

What books are on the 2011-12 list?
A chart with titles and links is below.  Click on the book covers to read more about them.
Each book cover is linked to our RHS Destiny catalog where you can read the summary and location information.  An LMC Battle of the Books bulletin board and display contains the current contest books.   The senior division reading list aims to expose students to current award winning literature. The list incorporates awards such as: Golden Archer, Newbery, Printz, Siebert and others.  A title list can be viewed here.

  • Two copies of each book are available in the LMC to loan out
  • You can also check the Rhinelander District Library to see if copies are available to check out.
  • You can purchase copies through Amazon.com or through our local bookstores.
  • Or, you can go to Booksfree.com and pay $11 to borrow the books for free!
