CHAMPS
The CHAMPS program began in September 2008 through a 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant with the goal of improving the academic and enrichment opportunities available to Middle School students in Rhinelander. In preparing for this grant, we found that the majority of students, especially in 6th - 8th grade spend one or more hours between 3:00-5:30 at home with no adult. No formal before or after-school educational support programs were previously available in the community for this age group.
In the 2009-2010 school year, we added a CHAMPS program at Central School, and this year we also offer programming at Northwoods Community Secondary School. Our program is supported by two 21st Century Community Learning Center Grants, which are collaborative efforts by the School District of Rhinelander, YMCA of the Northwoods, UW-Extension, and Nicolet Technical College. The grants are used for implementing after-school programming that provides students with a safe and inviting environment where they have access to academic and enrichment activities that will promote positive outcomes.
CHAMPS is a fun way for students to stay engaged in school, get help with their homework, participate in enrichment activites, and spend time at the YMCA.
Goals & Objectives
The primary goal of the CHAMPS program is to increase student academic performance through tutoring, physical activity, and enrichment activities. The activities are designed connect and expand on the school day. Our goal is for CHAMPS participants to have reduced negative behavior incidents, increased school performance, and increased motivation towards school.
