National Honor Society

The 2011-12 Walter F. Kruschke Chapter of the National Honor Society at Rhinelander High School currently has 28 members.  In addition to having demonstrated scholarship through attaining a minimum GPA of 3.8, membership in NHS also requires that students demonstrate leadership, service, and character.

Throughout the year, NHS members participate in various activities meant to highlight the pillars of membership.

  • DRESS DOWN DAYS - In order to raise monies for senior scholarships, NHS sponsors faculty dress down days each Friday throughout the school year.
  • TALENT SHOW - Spirit Week traditionally starts at RHS with the NHS Homecoming Talent Show on the Sunday before the game. Monies raised from admission to the event also go toward senior scholarships. However, due to constuction at RHS, the 2011 Talent Show was moved to February to coincide with Blackout Week.
  • ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT RECOGNITION - Members of NHS calculate which members of the student body are eligible for academic letter and bars.  Once recipients are determined, NHS works with the principal to honor them during the Academic Awards Program in late February/early March.
  • SERVICE ACTIVITY - NHS has selected to work with the HOPE CENTER for its service project in 2011-12.  The Hope Center provides meals to any who are in need on Friday evenings in downtown Rhinelander.

Membership in National Honor Society conforms to the national guidelines as outlined in the NHS Constitution.  Selection in NHS is a privilege, not a right.  Students do not apply for membership in the Society; instead, they provide information to be used by the local selection committee to support their candidacy for membership.  Membership is granted only to those students selected by the Faculty Council at Rhinelander High School.  This is not an election, nor is membership automatically conveyed simply because a student has achieved a specified level of academic achievement.  Equally important in the selection process are the other components of membership eligibility: leadership, service and character.

The following conditions make a student eligible for membership

  • Only those students who have attended Rhinelander High School for the equivalent of one semester  may be considered for membership.  This period is necessary for students to establish themselves and for the faculty to get to know them.  If additional information is needed, the transfer student's former school may be contacted.
  • Membership is open to all sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
  • Academic requirements are the same for all candidates in all classes.
  • If it is necessary to limit chapter size, the academic requirement for all candidates can be raised.
